Advancement

Merrik Bush-Pirkle, , Public Affairs, received an Award of Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII for outstanding research and science news writing. District VII covers a five-state region on the West Coast. Last year's Centennial magazine, published and edited by the Office of Publications, won an Award of Excellence in the Special Institutional Projects category in the 2000 CASE District VII Awards for Excellence Program.


Behavioral & Social Sciences

Yoshiko Yamamoto, Anthropology, presented a paper titled "When Japanese Address Deities ... the Art of Ema Offering" at the 25th Annual Conference of the Semiotic Society of America held Sept. 29.

Bernard Wong, Anthropology, presented a paper titled "Immigrant Entrepreneurship and the City" in a workshop on the "Chinese Entrepreneurship and Business Immigration," as part of the fifth International Metropolis Conference held Nov. 13-17 in Vancouver, Canada.

Barbara Holzman, Environmental Studies, presented the findings of her research on the recovery of the Bishop Pine forest, which was destroyed by a fire five years ago, at the Vision Fire Symposium held Oct. 14 at Point Reyes Station.


Business

Stanley Kowalczyk,Management, gave a presentation on "Reputation and Organizational Culture as Intangible Strategic Competencies in Seven of the Largest Silicon Valley Firms" at the 20th Annual International Conference of the Strategic Management Society, held Oct. 16 in Vancouver, Canada.

Moshen Naser Tavakolian,Accounting, presented a research paper titled "Internal Auditing Internships and Subsequent Academic Performance: Some Empirical Evidence," co-authored with John O'Shaughnessy, Accounting, and David Angrisani, at the International Conference of the Institute of the Internal Auditors held June 11-14 in New York.


Creative Arts

Michelle Wolf, Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, presented a paper on "Media Education and the Pedagogy of Personal Experience" to the Critical and Cultural Studies Division at the annual meeting of the National Communication Association held in November in Seattle.

"Producing a Magazine-Style Feature Program for Distribution on Commercial Broadcast Television," by Ron Compesi, Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, was published in the Summer 2000 issue of Feedback. Compesi also presented "Talking Heads: The Virtual Iconography of Television News and News Magazine Interviews" at the Virtual Communication Conference on July 5-8 in Pray, Montana.

Chitresh Das, Dance, presented a lecture/demonstration on classical Kathak dance of India at the Graduate Theological Union on Nov. 1 in Berkeley.

Joan Arhelger,Theatre Arts, designed the lighting for the Sacramento Opera's production of Carmen, which opened Nov. 3.

Carolynn Lindeman, Music, was recently appointed by President Bill Clinton to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Music, was named a fellow of the National System of Artists of Mexico.


Education

"How Dick and Jane Achieve Differently in Geometry Class," written by Penelope V. Flores, Secondary Education, was published in a recent issue of Journal of Interdisciplinary Education. Flores also wrote the Introduction chapter of "Tatlong Manyika (Three Dolls)," a Filipino anthology of plays written by Rey de la Cruz and published by PDM Press in September.

Antony J. Lepire, Secondary Education, presented a seminar on "American Public Schools in California" to seven dignitaries from the Russian Ministry of Education on Oct. 22 at Stanford University and UC Berkeley.

Judy Kysh, Secondary Education, presented two papers titled "Talking Mathematics with the Teacher While Working in Small Groups in an Algebra I Class: Some Differences and Similarities in Discourse for Stronger and Weaker Students," and "From Teacher Research to School Change: Involving More Teachers in Teaching Mathematics for Understanding," at the Psychology of Mathematics Education North American Conference held Oct. 10-17 in Tucson, Ariz. Kysh also presented a workshop on "Building Strong Fo undations for Algebra" at the California Mathematics Council (Southern Section) Conference held Nov. 6-7 in Palm Springs.

"Multiple Embedded Scaffolds: Support for English Speakers in a Two-Way Spanish Immersion Program," written by Suzanne Peregoy, Elementary Education, and Owen Boyle, was recently published in the Bilingual Research Journal by the National Association for Bilingual education. Another article by Peregoy and Boyle, "English Learners Reading in English: What We Know, What We Need to Know," appeared in a recent issue of Theory in Practice.


Ethnic Studies

"Summers With You," a poem dedicated to "Angie 1897-1976," written by Dorothy Tsuruta, Black Studies, recently placed honorable mention in the Detroit Writers' Guild's annual Paul Lawrence Dunbar Poetry Contest. Tsuruta's poem was also published in the November 2000 edition of the Detroit Writers' Guild Chapbook.

Jose B. Cuellar, La Raza Studies, gave a lecture on "Loco-Motion Rhythms and Flavors in New Chicano Music," on Oct. 31 as part of the Visions From The Heart Series sponsored by the Department of Chicano Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Cuellar also presented a keynote lecture titled "The Impact of Alcohol in Latino Communities" on Nov. 5 at the General Session of Oregon's 17th Annual Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Prevention Conference, "Year 2000: A Ton of Prevention."

Eric Mar, Asian American Studies, was elected to the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education in last month's election.


Health and Human Services

Erik Peper, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies/Health Education, gave a lecture on "Lichaamsbewustwording en gezondheid" to the Intervisiegroup WESP of the Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuurbeheer en Visserij in Utrech, as well as "Demonstratie psychofysiologisch onderezoekprotocol" and "Beeldschermwek meerdimensionaal beschouwd" to the Nederlands Paramedisch Instituut's program, Repetitive Strain Injury in Papendal, The Netherlands, on Oct. 16. Peper and Katherine H. Gibney, Institute for Holis tic Healing Studies/Health Education, also wrote an article titled "If it is Just Ergonomics, Why Do My Employees Still Hurt?", published in the November/December issue of Safe Workplace.

Bill Michaelis, presented "The FUN-damentals of Play Leadership Ð Grundlagen der Spielleitung" and "LAUGH AND LEVEL With MeLache und Teile Mit Mir" on Oct. 14 in Munchen, Germany. Michaelis also presented "Laugh and Level With Me" to the administrative team of the Culver City Unified School District on Aug. 17.

Robyn Lock, Kinesiology, presented a paper on "Feminist Reflections in Teacher Education: The Problem of the Body" at the 27th annual fall conference of Research on Women and Education held Oct. 14 in San Antonio. Lock, along with Susan Wilkinson, presented a paper on "Learning by Doing in the California Subject Matter Projects" at the Fall California Alliance for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance Conference held Oct. 16 in Sacramento.

Nancy J. Rabolt, Consumer & Family Studies/Dietetics, and Lynn Barnes, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies, presented a paper titled "Country Image: Relationship Between Perceived Garment Quality and Purchase Intent" at the November meeting of the International Textiles and Apparel Association in Cincinnati. Rabolt also presented "Korean and U.S. College Student Attitudes and Behavior Toward Apparel Magazine Advertisements According to Physical Self-concept" and "Korean and U.S. College Students' Clothing Buying Patterns Relative to Self-Concept" with Choon Sup Hwang at the same conference.

Carol Severin, Recreation and Leisure Studies, recently received the Cornelius Amory Pugsley Award from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in association with the National Park Foundation for her achievement in parks and recreation at the regional/state level.


Humanities

Masahiko Minami, Foreign Languages and Literatures, presented a poster session on "Frog Stories: Second-language Learners' Narrative Development" at the seventh International Pragmatics Conference held in July in Budapest, Hungary. Minami presented a paper titled "Vocabulary Development in Bilingual and Language-Minority Children" at the second Japanese Society for Language Sciences held in August in Kyoto, Japan.

"How Transformative is Volunteer Mediation? A Qualitative Study of the Claims of Volunteer Mediators in a Community Justice Program," written by Marc Martin, Speech and Communication Studies, was published in the Fall 2000 issue of the Mediation Quarterly.

Anatole Anton, Philosophy, presented several sections of his paper titled "Public Goods as Commonstock: Notes on the Receding Commons" at the fourth International Radical Philosophy Association Conference held Nov. 2-5 at Loyola University in Chicago.


Chris Wen-Chao Li, Foreign Languages, presented a paper titled "ICQ, BBS and MTV: The Changing Face of Modern Standard Chinese as Reflected in Popular and Electronic Media" at the Chinese Language Teachers Association of California Fall 2000 Meeting held Nov. 4 in San Francisco.
