Items are edited for space.

Behavioral & Social Sciences

Barbara Holzman, Enviromental Studies/Geography and Human Environmental Studies, presented a paper titled "Isolation of Natural Areas Due to Urban Development: San Francisco" at the 97th annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers held in late February in New York City.


Business

"Do Corporate Reputations Reflect Perceptions of Organizational Culture?", written by Stanley Kowalczyk, Management, and Sylvia Flatt, was published in the fall 2000 issue of Corporate Reputation Review. "Internal Auditing Internships and Subsequent Academic Performance: Some Empirical Evidence," written by John O'Shaughnessy, Accounting, and Mohsen Naser-Tavakolian, Accounting, was published in the November/December 2000 issue of Internal Auditing.


Creative Arts

Yu-Charn Chen, Design and Industry, presented a paper titled "A Quick and Effective Design and Electronic Circuits" at the International Conference of the National Association of Industrial Technology held Nov. 2, 2000.

Paula Levine, Art, showed an exhibition titled "This is Not a Book" in March at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.

Todd Roehrman, Theatre Arts, designed costumes for A Traveling Jewish Theatre's production of "See Under: Love," which was performed Feb. 19-March 25 in San Francisco.

Joel Schechter, Theatre Arts, served as moderator for "Conversations in Commedia," a Feb. 28 comic performance held at the La Peņa Cultural Center in Berkeley.

Branford Marsalis, Music, won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for his album "Contemporary Jazz."

Chitresh Das, Dance, and the Chitresh Das Dance Co. performed at The India Earthquake Concert held March 2 at the Jubilee Christian Theater in San Jose. The concert, which also featured Das dancing on stage with MC Hammer, raised nearly $10 million for the relief effort for the recent earthquake in India. Several faculty members in the Dance Department made presentations and taught master classes at the American College Dance Festival held March 8-10 in Phoenix. Albirda Rose presented a lecture on "The Art of Katherine Dunham," Susan Whipp directed the SFSU Dance Co. in concert, and Alicia Pierce and Cathleen McCarthy taught master classes in Modern Dance Technique at the festival.

J.B. Wilson, Theatre Arts, designed the scenery for the American premiere of "The 3hree Musketeers," a new musical developed and produced by the American Musical Theatre of San Jose. The musical opened March 10 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts.


Education

Penelope Flores, Secondary Education, was elected president of the Philippine Association of Writers and Artists on Dec. 16, 2000. "Ethnomathematics: From Abel to Tinalak," a monograph book written by Flores, was published in October 2000 by the University of the Philippines Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development.

Bryna Rifkind, Elementary Education, was one of 20 educators nationwide to attend a two-day session of the PATHWISE Framework Induction Program's Training of Trainers held in February at Educational Testing Services in Princeton, N.J.

Andrew Dubin, Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies, presented a paper titled "Selecting for Retention" at the Peace Corps Fellows/USA Coordinators' Meeting held Nov. 2, 2000, in Wichita, Kan. Dubin gave a speech on his leadership experiences to The Association of Chinese Teachers' Educational Leadership Forum held Feb. 10 at Marina Middle School in San Francisco.


Ethnic Studies

"What a Difference a Decade Makes: Judicial Response to State and Local Minority Business Set-Asides Ten Years After," by Donna Hubbard, Black Studies, and Docia Rudley, was published in the fall 2000 issue of the Southern Illinois University Law Journal.

Jose Cuellar, Raza Studies/Cesar E. Chavez Institute for Public Policy, gave a workshop presentation on "Chicano Culture" at the Western Workers Labor Heritage Festival 2001 at City College of San Francisco on Jan. 14. Cuellar presented a lecture titled "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar E. Chavez Through the Eyes of Dr. Loco" on Jan. 19 as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Week Celebration at Northern Michigan University.


Health and Human Services

Adam Burke, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies/Health Education, and Erik Peper, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies/Health Education, presented a paper on "College Student Computer Use and Ergonomic Knowledge" at the Biofeedback Foundation of Europe Annual Meeting held Feb. 15-19 in Prien, Germany.

On Nov. 30, 2000, the Institute for Holistic Healing Studies was presented with a California State Assembly certificate of recognition from Assemblywoman Carole Migden in honor of its grand re-opening.

"Motor Learning as a Function of KR Schedule and Characteristics of Intrinsic Feedback," an article by David Anderson, Kinesiology, was published in a recent issue of the Journal of Motor Behavior.


Humanities

"Disability and Biotechnology," an article written by Anita Silvers, Philosophy, and Ani Satz, appears in "The Encyclopedia of Biotechnology: Ethical, Legal and Policy Issues," edited by Tom Murray and Maxwell Mehlman and published by John Wiley and Sons in October 2000.

Fred Astren, Jewish Studies, wrote entries on "Karaites" and "Magharians" published in the "Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls," edited by Lawrence H. Schiffman and James C. VanderKam and published by Oxford University Press in 2000. Astren also wrote an entry on "Karaites" for the "Reader's Guide to Judaism," published by Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers in 2000.

Melanie Wise, English, Michael Martin, English, Brian Strang, English, and Mary Winegarden, English/World and Comparative Literature, helped write the chapter "Same Struggle, Same Fight: A Case Study of University Students and Faculty United in Labor Activism," which appears in the book "Moving a Mountain: Transforming the Role of Contingent Faculty in Composition Studies" recently published by the National Council of Teachers of English. Several other authors also helped wr ite the chapter.

"Learning How," a poem by Sally Croft, English, appears in the spring 2001 edition of Red Owl.

Anatole Anton, Philosophy, Milton Fisk and Nancy Holmstrom, presented a discussion of their book "Not For Sale: In Defense of Public Goods" at Modern Times Bookstore in San Francisco on March 15.


Library

"Tell Us All the News: Letters from Peacham Vermont at Mid-Nineteenth Century," an article by Lynn A. Bonfield, Library/Labor Archives, was published in the summer/fall 2000 issue of Vermont History.


Science and Engineering

"A New Species of Incrustocalyptella from Thailand," an article written by Dennis Desjardin, Biology, T. Boon Pratuang, P. Ruksawong and N. Hywel-Jones, was published in a recent issue of Fungal Diversity. "A New Species of Strobilurus from Montane California," an article written by Desjardin, was published in a recent issue of Micologia.
