Frequently Asked Questions about Spring 2003 fee increases

How much will my fees increase?

Beginning spring 2003, the State University Fee will increase $72 a semester for undergraduates and $114 a semester for graduate students. Also beginning spring 2003, the SFSU Student Health Service Fee will increase by $17 a semester for all students.

Why are fees increasing?
The California State University Board of Trustees increased the State University Fee at its Dec 16, 2002 meeting. Trustees said the hike was necessary because of deep budget cuts by the state and unfunded costs incurred earlier this year. The increase affects all 23 CSU campuses. The increase in the Student Health Service Fee will ensure that SFSU is able to continue providing basic health services for all students in the face of escalating medical costs.

With the fee increases, how much will I pay in total fees for spring semester?

Full-time undergraduate: $1,002
Full-time graduate: $1,083
Part-time undergraduate: $702
Part-time graduate: $768

If I have already paid spring 2003 fees, do I have to pay the increases?

Yes, all students must pay the higher fees.

Do out of state and international students also have to pay higher fees?

Yes. Keep in mind, though, that the $282 per unit that out-of-state and international students pay in addition to registration fees is not changing for spring 2003.

When is the deadline for paying fees?

You should pay all fees no later than Jan. 9, 2003.

Can I get an extension to pay the fee increases?

You should contact the Bursar's Office to make arrangements to receive an extension.

I won't be on campus until the week of Jan. 21, 2003. What's the best way for me to pay the difference that I owe?

You should mail a personal check or certified funds (i.e., cashier's check or money order) in the amount you owe to: Bursar's Office, ADM 155, SFSU, San Francisco, CA 94132.

Make checks and certified funds payable to SFSU. Include your name, student I.D. number, current address and phone number on the face of the check or certified funds.

If you prefer to pay by credit card, be aware that this will result in a 2.9 percent nonrefundable convenience fee charged by CashNet Smartpay, a third-party vendor. You can access the vendor online or by calling (866) 536-2401

Will my spring 2003 financial aid cover the fee increases?

In some cases, yes, but only partially. If you are receiving a State University Grant or Cal Grant for the spring 2003 semester, your award will be increased to cover the higher State University Fee but not the Student Health Service fee. For all financial aid recipients, if you use a fee deferment to register, the Bursar's Office will automatically deduct the fee increases from your financial aid at the time of disbursement.

Can I apply for additional financial aid for spring 2003?

If you have not borrowed your annual maximum in student loans or if you have a work-study award, you may request an increase. Your request must be made in writing and submitted by fax or e-mail or hand delivered to the Financial Aid Office at the One Stop Student Services Center.

When can I apply again for financial aid?

For the 2003-2004 academic year, you may start applying for financial aid on Jan. 1, 2003. You should submit your 2003-2004 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) no later than March 3, 2003 for priority consideration. If you are an undergraduate seeking a Cal Grant for the 2003-2004 academic year, you must meet this deadline. The 2003-2004 FAFSA will be available at www.fafsa.ed.gov beginning Jan. 1, 2003.

When was the last time that the CSU State University Fee and the Student Health Service Fee were raised?

The CSU has not raised fees for resident students since the 1994-1995 school year. In fact, undergraduate fees have decreased 10 percent since that time. The Student Health Service Fee was last increased in 1994.

How do SFSU fees compare to those at state universities elsewhere?

SFSU remains a great educational value. Our fees are significantly lower than those at comparable universities across the country.
