Associate Professor of Asian American Studies Valerie Soe received a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission 2015 Cultural Equity Fund for her documentary film "Love Boat: Taiwan." The grant will cover partial research and development costs for the film, which looks at the Taiwan Love Boat, a popular summer study program which is also known for its romantic opportunities and which reflects the history and politics of modern Taiwan.

Soe's film "Joel Hunt," a short documentary she directed in collaboration with the Veteran Documentary Corps (VDC), an ongoing project of the Documentary Film Institute at SF State University, premiered Feb. 24 as part of the second annual VDC film program at the Coppola Theater. The film follows a soldier's struggle to reclaim his life from the trauma of his military service in Iraq.

Associate Professor of Asian American Studies Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales received the 2015 Association of Asian American Studies Engaged Scholar Award.
