Faculty lineup for commencement
The University's commencement ceremony will take place Saturday, May 24, in Cox Stadium. Faculty members participating in the ceremony should line up no later than 12:15 p.m. next to the Student Services building to guarantee a seat on the staging area.

Segment II committee members needed
The Academic Senate will hold additional faculty governance elections at its Tuesday, May 13, meeting. There are four openings for General Education Segment II subcommittees:
- A three-year term on the American Ethnic-Racial Minorities Committee. Nominees may come from Business, Education, Health and Human Services, Science and Engineering, the Library or Student Services.
- A one-and-a-half-year term on the Behavioral and Social Sciences Committee. Nominees may come from Business, Creative Arts, Education, Health and Human Services, Humanities, Science and Engineering, the Library or Student Services.
- A one-and-a-half-year term on the Humanities and Creative Arts Committee. Nominees may come from Business, Education, Health and Human Services, Science and Engineering, the Library or Student Services.
- A two-year term on the Lifelong Development Committee. Nominees may come from Business, the Library or Student Services.
Senate officers will also be elected for the 2003-04 academic year. Positions include chair, vice chair, secretary and two executive committee members at large.

Nonresident taxation issues
Campus departments who hire or otherwise request payments for nonresident alien students, faculty or staff should make sure they go to the Internal Audit office and determine the taxability of those payments.
Internal Audit, including the tax specialist who handles nonresident alien taxation issues, has moved to room 154A of the Administration building (across the lobby from the Cashier's Office).

Account review service available
The Accounts Payable Department is now taking appointments to meet one-on-one to review University accounts. Accounts Payable staff will review your open commitments, advise you on your year-end needs, and provide direction for the new fiscal year. Appointments are available from 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays throughout the month.

CampusMemo changes
CampusMemo is changing its format. Starting with the June 9 edition, Public Affairs and the Division of Information Technology will e-mail each issue to faculty and staff. The e-mail will contain links to the Web version of CampusMemo, which will include longer versions of some items.
The deadline and methods of submitting items to CampusMemo will remain the same. See the shaded box below for details.

Tuesday
Malcolm X celebration
The Cesar Chavez Student Center presents a daylong celebration Tuesday to commemorate the naming of Malcolm X Plaza and the birthday of Malcolm X. A noon event at Malcolm X Plaza will feature music, dance performances and speakers. "Malcolm X: Soldier of Righteousness" will be screened at 2 p.m. in the Richard Oakes Multicultural Center.

Student show their science skills
Thousands of dollars in prize money are at stake at the College of Science and Engineering's Fifth Annual Student Project Showcase and Alumni Reception. The campus community is invited to browse more than 40 student science exhibits from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of the Science building.
An alumni reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 201 of the Science building. Faculty and staff are invited to enjoy food, guest speakers and door prizes.

Wednesday
History faculty on Iraq
History Department faculty members will discuss the aftermath of the war in Iraq from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in room 210 of the Science building.
The panel discussion, moderated by history Professor Jules Tygiel, includes Abdiel Onate, professor of Latin American history; Anthony D'Agostino, professor of international history; Chris Jackson, professor of European history; Jerry Combs, professor of American diplomatic history; and Maziar Behrooz, professor of history of the Islamic world.
The event is sponsored by the History Department and the Year of Civil Discourse.

Persuasive Utopias
Ellen Peel, professor of English and comparative and world literature, will present "Narrative Persuasion in Feminist Utopias" from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in room 473 of the Humanities building.

Former Athens mayor speaks
The Honorable Dimitris Avramopoulos, former mayor of Athens, Greece, will speak on "Cities and International Diplomacy" at 7:30 p.m. Friday in room 133 of the Humanities building. A reception follows in room 587 of the Humanities building.
The event is sponsored by Modern Greek Studies through the support of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.

Memorial for Griff Richards
A memorial service in honor of Griffith Richards, professor emeritus of speech and communication studies, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the University Club. R.S.V.P. to Victoria Chen at kumquat@sfsu.edu.
Richards died Jan. 31, 2003. An obituary will appear in next week's CampusMemo

Film finals
The 43rd Annual Film Finals will be screened from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 16, in McKenna Theatre of the Creative Arts building. A 6 p.m. reception precedes the screening.
The event features student works in a variety of genres, including narrative, documentary and experimental.
Tickets are $5 and include admission to the reception. Call the Creative Arts Box Office at ext. 8-2467.

Grantwriting workshop
The Office of Community Service Learning will host a one-week training on writing grant proposals July 21-25. The workshop, presented in cooperation with the Grantsmanship Center, will also cover program planning and include an in-depth analysis of both public and private funding services.

Academic Senate Action
At it's meeting of April 29, the Academic Senate...
Heard an announcement from Chair Robert Cherny:
- Cherny reported that initial planning for next year's budget is based on the governor's proposed state budget and real planning would not take place until the state Legislature passes a budget sometime in August or beyond.
Heard a report from Vice President Leroy Morishita:
- Morishita presented a comprehensive review of the University's facilities growth and development, focusing on recent building construction, seismic upgrades, ADA compliance and maintenance. He reported on the University's recent land and building acquisitions and those in process. He also reported on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Residence Apartment Building.
Heard a report from Provost John Gemello:
- Gemello reviewed an evaluation of classroom sections offered by the University in fall 2002 and those that are scheduled to be offered in fall 2003. The data indicated an increase of 31 sections for this coming fall. Additionally, he said that 57 faculty members have been hired from the 111 active tenure-track searches and those departments that want to postpone their searches until next year may do so.
In the action part of the meeting, the Senate:
- Elected Johnetta Richards, Black Studies, to the Academic Council on International Programs of the California State University; Charles Egan, Foreign Languages and Literatures, to the Alumni Association Board; Rick Houlberg, BECA, and Loretta Stec, English, to the Board of Appeals and Review; Madeline Hsu, Asian American Studies, to the Children's Center Advisory Board; James Bebee, Design and Industry, to the Enrollment Management Advisory Committee; Mark Phillips, Secondary Education, and Corless Smith, BECA, to the Franciscan Shops Board of Directors; Robert Williams, Counseling, to the Graduate Council; and Robert Cherny, History, to the University Budget Committee.
- Approved changes to the policy on difference-in-pay leaves.
- Approved changes to the policy on appointment of tenure-track faculty members.
- Approved changes to the bachelor's of science in chemistry.
- Discussed the proposed policy creating the University Historical Archives and establishing a University Historical Archives Advisory.*
- Discussed a proposed resolution on the CSU Common Management System.*
- Discussed a proposed resolution on civil liberties.*
*These items will return in second reading at the May 13 meeting.
