Ten student delegates present research at CSU competition

Ten students whose research entries were selected to represent SFSU at the CSU Student Research Competition will present their work today and Tuesday at CSU Stanislaus. The 10 delegates, the most ever for SFSU, were selected in March from a group of 32 campus entries.

The delegates and their entry categories are: Jennifer Ibardolaza (undergraduate student) in Behavioral and Social Sciences; Rob Fanter (undergrad) and Bryan Kuo (graduate student) in Biological and Agricultural Sciences; Kiran Gowda (grad) in Business, Economics and Public Administration; Norman Gilchrist (undergrad) in Creative Arts and Design; Bahrig Mikaelian (grad) in Education; Eli Levine (grad) in Engineering and Computer Science; Niloufar Naghshineh (grad) in Health, Nutrition and Clinical Science; Jeanne Jacobs (grad) in Humanities and Letters; and Ian R. Sammis (grad) in Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

Announcements

Travel funds for staff

Last year the SFSU Retirement Association provided support for travel to faculty members. This year staff members will receive support. The association will accept applications until Saturday, May 10, for approved, job-related travel for University staff members. Individual requests cannot exceed $1,000.

Letters of application should contain the purpose of the travel as well as travel plans and costs. Send applications to the SFSU Retirement Association, care of Franklin Sheehan, Mathematics Department, or via e-mail to sheehan@math.sfsu.edu.

Macy’s discounts this week

The Stonestown Macy’s store has donated more than 2,000 "Friends and Family" discount cards to the University. The discount card offers 10 to 20 percent off regular, sale and clearance prices from Thursday, May 1, through Sunday, May 4.

While the cards may be used at any Macy’s store, Public Affairs encourages faculty and staff to shop at the Stonestown store because it donated the cards.

Pick up a discount card during business hours at either Human Resources, room 251 of the Administration building, or Public Affairs, room 110 of the Lakeview Center.

Bring your SFSU ID. Supplies are limited to one card per person, and cards must be picked up in person.

Final week for calendar survey

The Academic Senate is surveying faculty and staff about the academic calendar, including the timing of spring recess and more. To participate, fill out the online poll at www.sfsu.edu/calendarsurvey/.

Faculty governance nominations, election

The Academic Senate will elect faculty to fill 10 governance positions at its next meeting, held from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Nob Hill Room of the Seven Hills Conference Center. Nominees will be accepted from the floor and self-nominations are encouraged.

There will be no time for speeches; however, nominees are welcome to arrive early and distribute position statements or speak during the open floor period before the meeting.

The open positions and terms of service are:a three-year term on the Academic Council on International Programs of the California State University; a one-year term on the Alumni Association Board; two positions for a one-year term on the Board of Appeals and Review; a one-year term on the Children’s Center Advisory Board; a three-year term on the Enrollment Management Advisory Committee; a three-year term on the Franciscan Shops Board of Directors; a two-year term on the Franciscan Shops Board of Directors; a two-year term on the Graduate Council; and a three-year term on the University Budget Committee.

More elections

The Academic Senate will hold additional faculty governance elections at its Tuesday, May 13, meeting. There are four openings for General Education Segment II sub-committees:

Senate officers will also be elected for the 2003–04 academic year. Positions include chair, vice chair, secretary and two executive committee members at large.

Masks and temples of El Salvador

Two new exhibits featuring work from El Salvador are currently featured at the Treganza Museum of Anthroplogy. "Gilberto Elia: One of the Last Traditional Maskmakers of El Salvador" is located in the hall case across from room 377 of the Science building. "The Search for Xipe Totec," a photographic exhibit documenting anthropology Professor Karen Bruhns’ archaeological excavations in El Salvador, includes photos of Teo temples dedicated to Xipe Totec, the god of political intimidation. It can be seen in the hall outside room 270 of the Science building.

The exhibits can be viewed 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. They will be in place through summer.

Tuesday

Academic Senate meeting

The Academic Senate will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Nob Hill Room of the Seven Hills Conference Center. Note that the session will be an hour longer than normal due to a full agenda.

Agenda items include: A report from Leroy Morishita, vice president for administration and finance, on University property acquisitions; elections (see announcement item on page one for details); proposed changes to the policy on difference-in-pay leaves; proposed changes to the policy on appointment of tenure-track faculty members; proposed changes to the bachelor’s degree in chemistry; a proposed policy on creating the University Historical Archives and establishing a University Historical Archives Committee; a proposed resolution on the CSU Common Management System; and a proposed resolution on civil liberties.

Workshop on faculty promotion committees

The Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development will hold a workshop for faculty serving on retention, tenure and promotion committees from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday in room 460 of the Administration building.

The workshop will review Academic Senate policies and participants will discuss best practices. A resource packet containing both SFSU-specific, and general faculty evaluation materials will be available.

Visionary management

Jerry Porras, Lane Professor emeritus of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, will speak on visionary organizations and transformational management at 1 p.m. Thursday in room 104 of the Business building. Porras is co-author of "Built to Last."

Coming Up

View student science projects

Thousands of dollars in prize money are at stake at the College of Science and Engineering's 5th Annual Student Project Showcase and Alumni Reception. The campus community is invited to browse more than 40 student science exhibits from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, on the 2nd floor of the Science building.

From underwater traffic pollution, parasitic plants and gene mutations, to worm digestion and computer programming shortcuts, place your own bets on which research projects walk away winners.

An alumni reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 201 of the Science building. Enjoy food, guest speakers and door prizes.

Narratives and feminist Utopias

Ellen Peel, professor of English and comparative and world literature, will present "Narrative Persuasion in Feminist Utopias" from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in room 473 of the Humanities building.

The role of cities in international diplomacy

The Honorable Dimitris Avramopoulos, former mayor of Athens, Greece, will speak on "Cities and International Diplomacy" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 9, in room 133 of the Humanities building. A reception follows in room 587 of the Humanities building.

The event is sponsored by Modern Greek Studies through the support of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.
