New Liberal Studies Program coordinator
After an extensive search Eva Chuck has been hired as the Liberal Studies Program coordinator effective this semester. Chuck completed her undergraduate and graduate work at SFSU and has worked on campus since 1985 -- first as an academic counselor in the Undergraduate Advising Center and later as the admission/selections coordinator for the Educational Opportunity Program.
International Programs grants announced
The Office of International Programs is proud to announce the recipients of the 2003–04 Faculty International Development Grants. The grants are awarded for research and activities that promote or foster international education at SFSU. Grant amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000. This year’s recipients are:

Family Resource Center needs computers
The Stay-In-School Family Resource Center needs computers that are functional and in good condition.
The center provides support for low-income parents and parents on CalWorks who attend SFSU. Most of the students do not own home computers and use the computer lab to complete homework while their children are supervised in the nearby child-friendly room.

Open faculty governance positions
The Academic Senate will elect faculty to fill 10 governance positions at its next meeting, held from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the Nob Hill Room of the Seven Hills Conference Center. Nominees are needed and self-nominations are encouraged. Contact the Academic Senate office at ext. 8-1264 or senate@sfsu.edu. Nominees must respond by 10 a.m. Wednesday in order to be printed in the meeting agenda.
Nominees will also be accepted from the floor.
There will not be time for speeches; however, nominees are welcome to arrive early and distribute position statements or speak during the open floor period before the meeting.
The open positions and terms of service are:
A three-year term on the Academic Council on International Programs of the California State University; a one-year term on the Alumni Association Board; two positions for a one-year term on the Board of Appeals and Review; a one-year term on the Children’s Center Advisory Board; a three-year term on the Enrollment Management Advisory Committee; a three-year term on the Franciscan Shops Board of Directors; a two-year term on the Franciscan Shops Board of Directors; a two-year term on the Graduate Council; and a three-year term on the University Budget Committee.
The Academic Senate is surveying faculty and staff about the academic calendar, including the timing of spring recess and more. To participate, fill out the online poll at www.sfsu.edu/calendarsurvey/.

The Stonestown Macy’s store has donated more than 2,000 "Friends and Family" discount cards to the University. The discount card offers 10 to 20 percent off regular, sale and clearance prices from Thursday, May 1, through Sunday, May 4.
While the cards may be used at any Macy’s store, Public Affairs encourages faculty and staff to shop at the Stonestown store since it donated the cards.
Pick up a discount card during business hours at either Human Resources, room 251 of the Administration building, or Public Affairs, room 110 of the Lakeview Center.
Bring your SFSU ID. Supplies are limited to one card per person, and cards must be picked up in person.

The scoop on war photographers
Peter Howe, author of "Shooting Under Fire: The World of the War Photographer," will talk about how and why photographers risk their lives to take combat photos at 7:15 p.m. today in room 128 of the Humanities building.
The Technical and Professional Writing Program and the Career Center will offer a workshop for those interested in technical and professional writing careers from 6 to 8 p.m. today in room 587 of the Humanities building.
There will be a panel of speakers and small group discussions. Panelists will represent a variety of fields, including Web documentation, science writing, technical writing and grant-proposal writing.
Mahmood Hussain, assistant professor of marketing, will present "Searching for a Policy to Reduce Child Labor without Negative Consequences: A Computational Analysis" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 202 of the Business building.
The event is part of the College of Business Research Roundtable.

Computer-aided language learning
Ilona Vandergriff, associate professor of German, will present "Why Chat? A Comparison of Language Learner Discourse in Computer-assisted vs. Face-to-Face Discussions" from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in room 473 of the Humanities building.

A public forum on "The Role of the University in War Time" will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Rosa Parks Room of the Student Center. Participants will include representatives of Students Against the War, President Robert A. Corrigan, and Brian Murphy, professor of political science and executive director of the San Francisco Urban Institute.
Michelle Blair, filmmaker and instructor of language arts at San Jose City College, will screen her documentary "Inside Out: Stories of Bulimia" from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the conference room of the Student Health Service.
Blair spent more than three years interviewing and documenting the struggles of Bay Area
residents with bulimia. Donations are welcome and will go to support the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.
Ray Terry, retired chief deputy counsel for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, will present "Civil Rights in the 1960s" at 12:35 p.m. Thursday in room 270 of the Science building.
Terry served as a civil rights attorney for the Justice Department, working on desegregation cases, voting rights and the famous “Mississippi Burning” case.
The event is sponsored by Christopher Waldrep, Pasker Chair.
Globalization’s impact on identity
Kuniko Miyanaga, former professor of social anthropology at International Christian University, Japan, and visiting scholar at Stanford University, will present "Globalization and Identity" from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in room 473 of the Humanities building.

SFSU will celebrate Founders Day at noon Thursday, May 1, on the Main Lawn. The celebration includes comments by President Robert A. Corrigan, announcement of the staff STAR of the Year award and performances by a jazz band led by SFSU music Lecturer Andrew Speight and the University Chorus. Following the program, President Corrigan and other administrators will serve birthday cake to the campus community.
Former Athens mayor on international diplomacy
The Honorable Dimitris Avramopoulos, former mayor of Athens, Greece, will speak on "Cities and International Diplomacy" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 9 in room 133 of the Humanities building. A reception follows the lecture in room 587 of the Humanities building.
The event is sponsored by Modern Greek Studies through the support of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.
At it’s meeting of April 15, the Academic Senate…
Heard from Associate Vice President Gail Whitaker:
- Whitaker talked about current upper-division courses offered at Cañada College and plans to offer upper-division courses at College of Marin’s Indian Valley campus.
In the action part of the meeting, the Senate:
- Approved a resolution mitigating the effects of the budget crisis in 2003–04 (and beyond).
- Approved a resolution opposing certain provisions of the U.S.A. Patriot Act of 2001 and endorsing corrective legislation.
- Approved revisions to the master’s degree in history.
- Approved revisions to the master’s degree in museum studies.
- Approved revisions to the University policy on written English proficiency and lower division requirements.
- Discussed revisions to the leaves with pay policy. The item returns to the Senate for a second reading at the April 29 meeting.
- Discussed revisions to the hiring policy for tenure-track faculty. The item returns to the Senate for a second reading at the April 29 meeting.
