Hideo Yonenaka
Professor Emeritus of Microbiology Hideo Yonenaka passed away in his sleep on Aug. 26 at the age of 84. A much-loved colleague, friend, teacher, advisor and mentor, Yonenaka taught in the department of biology from 1963 to 1992. After spending four years in a World War II Japanese-American internment camp, Yonenaka went on to serve in the U.S. Army before studying at University of California, Berkeley, University of Southern California, Scripps and UC Santa Barbara. He is survived by his wife, Professor Emerita of Biology Shanna Yonenaka, children Christopher and Kimberly, and his grandchildren. A memorial service was scheduled for Sept. 3 at the Konko Church in San Francisco.
