Health Education
Professor of Health Education Adam Burke was appointed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to a three-year term on the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health.

Kinesiology
Professor of Kinesiology Susan Zieff was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.

Music and Dance
The Alexander String Quartet
, quartet-in-residence in the School of Music and Dance, performed with June Oh on Sept. 26 at the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center. The quartet recently released two CDs on the Foghorn Classics label: a nine-disc set of Beethoven's complete string quartets and a collaboration with the Afiara String Quartet featuring works by Mendelssohn and Schubert.

Ronald Caltabiano, associate dean of the College of Creative Arts, gave a pre-concert talk Oct. 10 at the San Francisco Conservatory of  Music's "Blueprint." The conservatory's New Music Ensemble performed Caltabiano’s Concertini composition at the concert.

Philosophy
Professor of Philosophy Bas van Fraassen was named a Townsend Visitor to give a series of three lectures at the University of California, Berkeley on Oct. 7, 8 and 9.
