Alumni do "all right " at Golden Globes and Oscars

Updated Jan. 25: Annette Bening (B.A., 80) has received an Academy Award nomination for Actress in a Leading Role and Lisa Cholodenko (B.A., 87) is nominated for Writing (Original Screenplay), both for "The Kids Are All Right." Jan. 18, 2011 -- Hollywood veteran Annette Bening (B.A., '80) picked up her second Golden Globe award at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony Sunday, Jan. 17. The College of Creative Arts graduate was named best actress in a comedy or musical for her role as Nic in "The Kids Are All Right."

Bening said in her acceptance speech, "I'm very proud to be part of this very special film about two women who are very deeply in love and trying to keep their family together." She went on to thank the film's director and co-writer Lisa Cholodenko (B.A., 87). Both SF State alums had more reason to celebrate later in the evening when "The Kids Are All Right" received the Golden Globe for best picture (comedy or musical).

Bening, a six-time Golden Globe nominee and two-time winner, earned her first award in 2005 for her role in "Being Julia." Her other Hollywood honors include three Oscar nominations. In her last interview with SF State Magazine, Bening thanked her former professors Jack Byers, Stuart Chenoweth, Jack Cook, Alex Flett, Robert Graham and Tom Tyrell for helping her launch her acting career, saying, "I feel grateful that I had a chance to learn from veteran professionals."
