Good news for graduates -- employers are hiring
May 17 , 2011 -- The job outlook has improved for the 2011 graduating class, according to hiring projections captured in a national survey of employers by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
Employers plan to hire 19.3 percent more graduates from the class of 2010-11 than they did from the class of 2009-10, with engineering, accounting and business majors most in demand. The study reports increased hiring by all industries, except government agencies, which forecast a decrease in hiring.
"Overall, it's an encouraging forecast for graduates," said Alan Fisk, acting director of the Career Center. "The results need to be kept in perspective. Last year was a difficult job market year, and 2011 is relatively much better."
Regardless of major, employers place a premium on key skills: ability to communicate well, solve problems and prioritize work. Students who are graduating with degrees in humanities or liberal arts should focus on their experience and extracurricular activities that highlight these skills and those specific to the desired job, says Fisk.
"My advice to students is be flexible and understand that they may not get their ideal job," said Fisk. "Networking is essential. And it's vital to take care and be mindful with every interaction. A job lead to the hidden job market can come from anyone."
The SF State Career Center helps students and alumni develop, evaluate, and implement self-directed career, education, and employment decisions and plans. Graduating students may have free access to the Career Center services for six months post graduation. Members of SF State's Alumni Association may take advantage of the services for free.
