Ardila named top scholar nationally
Jan. 10, 2011 -- Assistant Professor of Mathematics Federico Ardila was one of 12 faculty members across the nation named an "Emerging Scholar" in the Jan. 6 issue of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, a national higher education magazine.

The magazine selects its annual list of the top young faculty of color by seeking "scholars who are breaking ground in new research and advancing our understanding of complex, contemporary issues with scholarship that is interesting and timely."
Ardila is a respected researcher in combinatorics, a relatively new area of mathematics that has applications in such areas as physics and computer science. He also launched the SFSU-Colombia Combinatorics Initiative, for which he teaches an innovative online math course to students at SF State, University of California, Berkeley and Universidad de los Andes in his native Colombia. For his excellence in research and teaching, Ardila was also awarded an NSF CAREER grant in 2010.
