"The purpose of our annual observance is to encourage study and volunteering abroad and foster more international goodwill," said Jay Ward, associate director of the Office of International Programs, which is organizing the week's activities. "The benefits of study abroad, such as understanding foreign cultures or learning global economics, are limitless."

Ward emphasized that the week's programs, planned by faculty, students and staff, target SF State's foreign and domestic students alike.

International students at SF State will enjoy a welcoming reception and several workshops geared to their needs including sessions on job search strategies, applying for permanent residency and obtaining a new student visa.

Throughout the week all students will have opportunities to explore international study and service at events where they can meet with peers who have studied abroad or volunteered in the Peace Corps. Faculty and international programming staff will also be available to answer questions, help with applications and financial aid, and advise students on the selection of countries in which to study. Academic classes will emphasize international issues and opportunities for students to participate in faculty-led international service learning. One of the week's most popular events, "Day in the Life of a Diplomat," will provide the opportunity for students to meet foreign-service representatives and learn about the responsibilities of diplomatic service.

Other highlights of International Education Week are:

  • The Museum Studies Department's student-curated exhibit, "Tree of Life: Preserving 3,000 Years of Family Heritage"
  • Culinary events including the Cultural Food Fair on the quad, international lunches in the Vista Room and dinners featuring a different ethnic cuisine each night in the City Eats dining hall
  • Chinese Culture Day, featuring food, dance, music and martial arts
  • A traditional Japanese tea ceremony

Details and a full schedule of events are available on the International Education Week webpage.

International Education Week was initiated in 2000 by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. For more information about finding and selecting a study abroad program, visit the Office of International Programs website.
