Smartphone app puts campus in the palm of visitors' hands
Oct. 18, 2011 -- Visitors can now tour the SF State campus in person or on screen with a new smartphone app as their campus tour guide.
The free application for Android and iPhone platforms can be streamed to accompany a stroll to each of the 27 stops on the tour or downloaded for a virtual visit. Users have the option to take the tour in order or select particular campus stops of interest from a list. Photos and embedded information, such as phone numbers, websites, e-mail addresses and facts about locations, appear on the screen. Interactive GPS maps indicate the distance between the user’s location and all included points of interest on the tour.
Elizabeth Stikkers, communications coordinator for enrollment management, helped develop the app. "This is a really flexible system that allows the University to update our tours instantly in the app and in less time than it takes to make adjustments to our other tours," Stikkers said. She added that video and audio can be added in the future.
The app augments existing options to tour the campus that include student-guided tours, a self-guided tour map, a virtual photo tour and tours tailored for students with disabilities. Stikkers said that the smartphone app is ideal for prospective students who cannot get to campus for the popular student-led tours.
Users can download the app from the Android Market or the App Store. The links to these and more information about SF State campus tours are available on the Future Student pages of the SF State website.
