Student's photos win professional praise

April 10, 2008 -- The San Francisco Press Photographers Association named journalism student Christopher McGuire the 2009 Student Photographer of the Year.

Judges made their selection after reviewing a portfolio of 38 images including these capturing a protest against China's involvement in the 2008 Olympics during the Olympic Torch run in San Francisco; Batman taking a break at a comic book convention; and police awaiting anti-war demonstrators at the 2008 Democratic National convention in Denver.

McGuire came to SF State specifically to study with Journalism Professor Ken Kobre, the author of prominent books on photography and photojournalism. "Christopher was a fabulous student who set the bar for his classmates," Kobre said. "I think the judges recognized a good, solid and very well-rounded portfolio."
