New fitness center opens on campus

August 26, 2005

The Village Fitness Center is a new amenity provided to residents of Mary Ward and Mary Park residence halls, the Science and Technology Theme Community, and the Towers and Village at Centennial Square. A limited number of memberships are also available to SFSU faculty, staff and commuter students on a month-to-month basis at $34 per month.

The facility boasts such state-of-the-art equipment as elliptical trainers, Star Trac treadmills, Technogym machines, plasma televisions and Kilowatt, a resistance and core-training machine that integrates video games from Microsoft's Xbox. All members will receive two complementary consultations with a personal trainer.

Managed by the national fitness company Club One, the Village Fitness Center aims to supplement existing facilities on campus such as the Gym and Fitness Plus program.

"We're not here to compete with school programs," said John Penacerrada, manager of the Village Fitness Center. "We want to provide a supplemental outlet for faculty, students and staff to use." Penacerrada, who graduated from SFSU in 2000, holds a degree in kinesiology.

Bob Spina, chair of kinesiology, looks forward to working with Penacerrada at the Village Fitness Center. "We're happy to hear that they're on campus.” Spina said. “It's a positive thing and it means more options to promote physical activity for people on campus."

Kerry Davis, a junior environmental science major who lives in The Village, thinks that the fitness center will round out existing resources on campus. "It's going to fit more people," he said. "Plus, the hours are great."

For more information, contact John Penacerrada at john.penacerrada@clubone.com or call (415) 452-1010. Interested parties can also stop by the Village Fitness Center. Hours are:

  • 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday;
  • 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Friday;
  • 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday; and
  • 12 to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
