Major league pitchers and catchers don’t report to spring training for another month, but the 2004 Gators are already practicing in full swing at Maloney Field. Under the direction of Coach Matt Markovich, the team returns 14 players from last season, including four starters. Last year, the Gators’ overall record was 27-27-1 (20-19 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association conference). The purple and gold's first game of the season is Feb. 1 against the Seawolves of Sonoma State, ranked ninth in the nation in a preseason poll by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and are the highest ranked squad from the NCAA West Region. The Gators play their first home game Feb. 5 against Western Oregon. Schedule highlights include games against UC Davis, Chico State and UC San Diego.
