June 9, 2003

Khani, who teaches video production and media aesthetics, won for "Adventures in Science and Art," a children's series he directed and produced for Peninsula TV. The program features children (left) using science and arts to solve problems.

The awards, the local version of the national accolades, recognize outstanding television work in 50 categories ranging from news programs and documentaries to audio production and graphic design.

Out of 622 entries, a total of 59 awards were awarded during the ceremony, held last month at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

Emmy night was not the first time Khani's work has been recognized. In April two of his other recent videos -- a recycling tutorial for children and a promotional piece -- won awards of excellence from the Broadcast Education Association, the leading professional organization for broadcast instructors.

Two other SFSU alumni were also among this year's Northern California Area Emmy recipients. Jim Lynch (BA, radio and television), of Fox Sports Net, was honored for sports direction. Meteorologist Joel Bartlett (MBA), of KGO-TV, Channel 7, won the award for on-camera weathercasting.

The Northern California Area Emmy Awards are presented by the Northern California chapter of the National Television Academy.
