In an event that promises eye-popping designs and innovative industrial art, the Design and Industry (DAI) Department showcases student work at its 14th annual spring exhibit through May 16 in Jack Adams Hall in the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Titled "Juicy: Design with a Twist," the show highlights more than 150 prototypes, models and demonstrations crafted by SFSU undergraduates. Offerings will include streamlined 3-D gadgets, state-of-the-art computer assisted technology and multimedia creations. Some of the prototypes illustrate universal product design, a technique for making consumer products friendly to the widest possible range of users, including those with physical disabilities. And many emphasize visual communication, with designs taking into account not only visual aesthetics but also intuitiveness, cultural appropriateness and nonverbal messages. Last year's show, "Spank: Design that Leaves a Mark," featured everything from interactive kiosks and politically inspired graphic design to perfume bottles and tongue-in-cheek wearable technology. Juicy is a project of DAI's Presentations and Exhibits class. Students on interdisciplinary teams planned and executed the event. Past exhibitions have attracted hundreds of Bay Area visitors. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Jack Adams Hall.
