The SFSU History Department will hold its final Iraq forum of the academic year from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in room 210 of the Science building. The event is free and open to the public.

Moderated by history professor Jules Tygiel, a diverse panel of history faculty will consider such topics as the rebuilding and democratization of Iraq, the war’s effect on international relations, the anti-war movement and the future role of the United States in the Middle East.

Panelists will include:

Maziar Behrooz, assistant professor of history, is an authority on the history of the Islamic world and current political and cultural trends. Behrooz created SFSU's two-part class on the history of the Islamic world from the years 500-1500 CE and 1500 CE to today.

Jerald Combs, professor of history, is an authority on the history of American foreign policy and U.S. military history.

Anthony D’Agostino, professor of history, is an expert on Russian and Eastern European history. He's written and spoken on 20th century Russian politics and diplomacy.

Chris Jackson, assistant professor of history, specializes in 20th century German history, including labor law, Nazism and the Holocaust.

Abdiel Oñate, associate professor of history, is an expert on the history and culture of Mexico and Latin America, with an emphasis in banking and economic affairs.

The panelists will take questions from the audience.

The event is part of the University’s Year of Civil Discourse, a series of events designed to promote civility and free speech on campus regarding complex subjects such as the Iraq war and peace in the Middle East.
