Earth Day will be celebrated on campus with two days of speakers and activities, Wednesday, April 16, and Thursday, April 17. The events take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Malcolm X Plaza.

Activities include:

Wednesday, April 16:

  • Noon: A roster of speakers, including Ann-Marie Sayers of the Ohlone Tribe on the Ohlone people and their spiritual relationship to the ecosystem; Henry Clark of the West County Toxics Coalition on environmental justice; Antonia Juhasz of the International Forum on Globalization on globalization and its effects on the environment; and Matt Gonzalez, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and one of the state's highest-ranking members of the Green Party, on San Francisco's role in the international ecological movement.
  • 1 p.m.: Student workshop on "What is Love?," a discussion building on the meaning of the campus banners "Love is Stronger than Hate."
  • 2 p.m.: Panel discussion on how globalization, militarization and war affects the ecosystem, social justice issues and public health.

Thursday, April 17

  • Noon: A roster of speakers, including Tom Ammiano of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on San Francisco's leadership role in the world community; Tony Gonzalez of the International Indian Treaty Council on Indians and their relationship to the land; and Khempo Yurmed Tinly Rinpoche of the Tibetan Buddhist Center of Marin County on interconnectedness and peace.
  • 12:30 p.m. Workshop on the politics of food sponsored by Holistic Health.
  • 1 p.m. Guest lecture by Khempo Yurmed Tinly Rinpoche of the Tibetan Buddhist Center of Marin County on "The Interconnectedness of All Things."
  • 2 p.m. Workshop on habitat restoration.
  • 3:30 p.m.: Workshop on renewable energy solutions.

Sponsors include The Forces of Nature, a group of environmental studies students; the Environmental Studies Program; the Holistic Healing Studies Program; and the Associated Students Women's Center, with support from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
