Jazz singer Wesla Whitfield to perform for free on campus

Renowned jazz and cabaret singer Wesla Whitfield, the 2001 SFSU Alumna of the Year, will perform at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Knuth Hall in the Creative Arts building on campus. Admission is free.

Whitfield, who earned a bachelor's degree in music in 1972, has brought her smooth jazz, cabaret vocals to venues across the United States and beyond for more than 25 years. Her repertoire includes songs by the likes of Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen and George and Ira Gershwin.

Whitfield's talents have garnered praised from critics at the New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Village Voice and San Francisco Chronicle. Tony Bennett once said: "This wonderful singer thrills me when I hear her."

The SFSU School of Music and Dance is sponsoring the event as part of its Afternoon Recital series.
