Make Sunday a day to discover SF Bay

October 1, 2003

Throughout the year, the 34-acre bay-front research facility in Tiburon is the hub of world-class scientific research on marine life, wetland restoration and alien invasions of Bay waterways. Sunday is all about fun and getting the younger generation interested in science and environmental conservation. RTC will open its doors to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a free festival that features marine animal touch tanks, scientific exhibits, live music, art and more.

In addition to science- and art-related activities for children, the festival will include exhibits and presentations by RTC scientists and students that highlight the Center's contributions to understanding and protecting the environment of San Francisco Bay and beyond.

As San Francisco State University's marine research field station, the Center also fulfills an academic mission by educating college students and providing them with research experience.

"Our mission encompasses both basic scientific research and education of the next generation of scientists, which we hope will include some of the children who visit us at Discovery Day," said RTC Director Alissa Arp.

Discovery Day features music performed by the SFSU Jazz Band as well as sizzling barbecue prepared by the Tiburon Volunteer Fire Department ($5). There is plenty of free parking on site.

Other scientific and environmental organizations participating in Discovery Day include the Aquarium of the Bay, Bay Model Association, California Academy of Sciences, Center for Ecosystem Survival, Cetacean Society, Bay Area Discovery Museum, Headlands Institute, Marine Mammal Center, Point Reyes Bird Observatory and the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Romberg Tiburon Center is dedicated to the study of the Bay, its surrounding environment and the global understanding of estuaries and other marine habitats.

The Romberg Tiburon Center is located at 3150 Paradise Drive, Tiburon. For more information and directions see the RTC Web site or call (415) 338-6063.
