A Closer Look: Branford Marsalis schools students on jazz

World-renowned jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis is on campus this week as artist-in-residence in the SFSU School of Music and Dance. In this position which Marsalis has held since 2000, he gives occasional guest lectures and private lessons to students in the school's Jazz and World Music Studies Program. He's also helped develop an innovative curriculum that shuns written jazz theory and focuses on teaching the music through its traditional oral, improvisational roots. He concludes a weeklong series of concerts at Yoshi's in Oakland Sunday, Sept. 28.
