8:46 a.m.: September 11, 2002 Return to SFSU Remembers schedule of events On a fog-shrouded morning that set the tone of somber remembrance, scores of students, faculty and staff stood together in silence at the top of campus at 19th and Holloway avenues to honor the victims and reflect on the first anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in America's history. At exactly 8:46 a.m., marking the (PDT) time the first airliner crashed into New York City's World Trade Center, trumpeter Kale Cumings played Taps and Sgt. Jennifer Schwartz of the University's Department of Public Safety lowered the United States and California flags to half-staff. Standing nearby at attention, attired in dress uniform, were other University law enforcement offficers, including Capt. Kirk Gaston, Cpl. Todd Iriyama, Officer Troy Liddi and Officer Rey Asuncion. With the ending of "Taps" the crowd proceeded down campus toward Malcolm X Plaza lead by Public Safety Sgt. Pat Wasley playing "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes (above right). Once gathered in the plaza the crowd stood in silence for more than 10 minutes (left). Only an occasional seagull's cry broke the silence. At 9 a.m. the trumpeter climbed the stairs to the terrace above the Cesar Chavez Student Center and at 9:03 a.m. played another round of Taps, signifying the time the second airliner hit the World Trade Center (below right). With the last note of "Taps" played, Wasley again blew into his bagpipe, walking toward Memorial Grove where members of the community will gather throughout the day to meditate and remember those lost.
