May 7, 2002 Senior Gladys Rodriguez recently won an internship at the CBS TV drama "The District." Rodriguez, a broadcast and electronic communication arts major, will work at the show's Santa Monica studio for eight weeks this summer. The internship is offered through a highly competitive Academy of Television Arts program. The Academy, which sponsors the annual Emmy awards, selects about 30 summer interns each year from hundreds of applicants from colleges and universities around the country. Winners have the opportunity to intern on network television shows produced in Los Angeles and for independent production companies and other entertainment industry organizations. Rodriguez, a native of Newark, Calif., won in the "Episodic Series" category. While she expects to experience many aspects of television production, Rodriguez will focus on script reading and editing since she aspires to be a professional television and screenwriter. Previous winners who interned at "The District" have gone on to become staff members at the show.
