SFSU's largest athletics event, the Johnny Mathis Invitational, will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in Cox Stadium. This year more than 400 athletes, including teams from Sonoma State University, Santa Clara University and Sacramento State University, are expected to participate in a variety of field and track events.

The general public is welcome. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children 14 and under, and free for children under 3. Students gain free admission with valid student ID. Concessions stands will be open and Invitational t-shirts can be purchased at the press box in Cox Stadium.

Cox Stadium was remodeled in 2001 and now includes new track, jumping and throwing facilities.

The Johnny Mathis Invitational, now in its 21st year, is named in honor of one of SFSU's most famous alumni. Mathis came to SFSU in 1954 with an athletic scholarship and set a high jump record as a member of the track team. He received an invitation to compete in the 1956 Olympic high jump trials, but the same week a Columbia Records executive heard him sing in San Francisco and recognized the 19-year-old student's rare talent. Mathis went on to record several Top 40 Hits and is one of the few artists to have a Top 40 song in each of the four decades since 1955.
