Journalism student Allan Yu recently received the Flannery-Hyatt Award for Academic Journalism for Promotion of Interfaith Understanding at a ceremony on campus. The new award, given to student journalists covering interfaith understanding and dialogue-building efforts, may become an annual grant.

SFSU social work alumna and former faculty member Lillian Hyatt was responsible for securing the $1,000 scholarship from Bank of America, which sponsors Interfaith Understanding, an organization Hyatt founded to build trust between religious groups and establish safe places for dialogue.

In October 2001, the organization sponsored the Conference on Interfaith Understanding, which was held at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco. Yu wrote an article on the conference for the online version of SFSU's student newspaper, Golden Gate [X]press.

Yu, an intern at the Oakland Tribune, plans a career in journalism after he graduates in May.
