SFSU will celebrate Peace Corps Week with four days of informative seminars on opportunities with the overseas aid organization, including an International Women's Week discussion with former recruits and a panel on incorporating the volunteer experience into a career. This year's event is expected to draw a large audience with President Bush's vow to double the number of Peace Corps recruits. Since Bush's mention in the State of the Union address, there has been a 39 percent rise in Peace Corps information seekers.

On campus, Peace Corps information meeting attendance had risen prior to the Bush's rallying call due to an increased international welfare interest during the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S. SFSU recruits more Peace Corps volunteers than any other non-Ph.D. granting university in the country.

The following events are slated for the week:

  • Tuesday, March 5: SFSU Returned Peace Corps Volunteers Panel, 2 p.m. Jack Adams Hall, Cesar Chavez Student Center. Members of the SFSU faculty, staff and administration will discuss their experiences in the Peace Corps and the influence upon their later careers.
  • Wednesday, March 6: Speak with a Peace Corps Recruiter, 10 a.m. to noon, Office of International Programs, Room 450 Administration Building. Meet one-on-one with a Peace Corps recruiter.
  • Thursday, March 7: Peace Corps Reception, 4 to 6 p.m., Room 460 Administration Building. Meet returned Peace Corps volunteers. Refreshments served.
  • Friday, March 8: Women in Peace Corps, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Office of International Programs, Room 450 Administration Building. Returned women Peace Corps volunteers give their perspective on their experience. General Peace Corps Information Meeting, 1 to 3 p.m. Room 450 Administration Building.
