MUSIC 150- Concert Music
Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs to take this course?

Music 150 is required of all undergraduate music majors each semester in residence, up to and including eight (8). The purpose of this requirement is to expose music students to the broadest possible musical repertoire. This conforms to guidelines established by the National Association of Schools of Music, our accrediting body. Concert attendance provides a community of peer support for student performers and affords valuable experience in critical judgment, concert etiquette, and program building. Music majors must register for this course each semester.

How do I fulfill this requirement?

Students must attend 15 Department performances per semester (includes all 1:00 recitals, senior and graduate recitals, faculty recitals, and major ensemble performances). Students may include five of their own performances (solo or group) toward this requirement. To receive credit for a performance, simply write the performance type and date (e.g., "Friday Recital 9/27") on one of the five blank lines on your card instead of getting a "punch." Multiple performance of the same program (e.g. choir tours) do not give multiple credit.

Can I still watch the performance if I'm late?

Once the recital begins, the Knuth Hall doors are locked to discourage performance interruptions. There will be an attendant to open the main door (closest to the Box Office) between each piece until half way through the recital (approximately 1:30pm). After that point, there will be no further admittance to the recital. Show courtesy to the performers and audience. Remember to wait quietly outside the door as voices, knocking, etc. can be heard inside Knuth Hall and will be heard on the recital recording.

What about off-campus events?

Off-campus recitals/concerts/performances will not normally be accepted for recital credit.

How is attendance recorded?

Students will receive a Music 150 card at the end of the first 1:00 recital attended. The card must be brought to each recital. Cards will be punched at the end of the performance by a music office staff member. Students must attend the entire performance to receive credit. Students without their cards may have their program punched. Then submit it to the Music Office within one week to have the punch transferred to the card. There are no exceptions to this time limitation.

What do I do when I'm done?

When 15 performances credits has been logged through any combination of punches and participation credits, deposit your card in the small wooden box on the wall next to the Knuth Hall recording booth. You may also bring it directly to the Music Office.

Notes:

  • Performances on tours and performances in the Student Union do not give Music 150 credit.
  • Lectures, clinics and workshops do not usually give Music 150 credit as they generally fulfill requirements for other classes. Exceptions will be posted in the Knuth Hall glass case.
  • Every Music 150 recital is recorded by the department. To request a dub of the performance, bring a blank tape to the Music Office and include your name, address, phone number, as well as the name and date of the performance you would like dubbed.
