Jazz Education Expands at San Francisco State University

SAN FRANCISCO, May 16, 2000 -- Internationally acclaimed saxophonist Branford Marsalis has been named as an artist-in-residence in the Music Department at San Francisco State University, beginning in the Fall 2000 semester. In his new position, Marsalis will work with SFSU students for extended periods twice each semester. Saxophonist and music educator Andrew Speight, the present director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, has also joined the faculty in the SFSU Department of Music.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Jazz and World Music Studies Program offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and provides a creative and unique perspective to the study and performance of jazz in relation to other musical traditions of the world.

Both vocalists and instrumentalists are encouraged to participate in a range of performance ensembles, including jazz/vocal combos in Blues/R&B, Gospel, Swing, Bebop, Modal/Free, Fusion, as well as Afro-Cuban, Balinese Gamelan, and Creative World Ensemble.

Students receive two full semesters of advanced private studio instruction, along with multi-level courses in jazz improvisation, composition and analysis, and history. These are integrated with courses in non-western cultural systems, including those of latin America, Asia, Oceania, and the Pacific Basin.

Other emphases include popular styles, ethnomusicology, oral traditions, and cross-cultural improvisation, with dynamic curriculum led by a faculty of renowned San Francisco Bay Area jazz and world music artists
