About the Recitals

All recitals take place in Knuth Hall (Creative Arts Building) unless otherwise noted. Admission is free (unless otherwise noted) and open to the general public.

For detailed program information, call the Recital Hotline at 415-338-1432, pick up a calendar from the Music Office (Creative Arts Building room 140), or email Music Office at: music@sfsu.edu.

It is also a MUS 150 requirement for all music majors to attend 15 ot these concerts ever semester. If you are a music major, make sure to sign up for this class and read the MUS 150 instructions.

Show your respect to the performers and audience by:

  • Being on time
  • Leaving/entering after each piece when the audience is clapping (not during the performance or movements!)
  • Wait patiently outside Knuth Hall without forcing or knocking on the doors for an attendant to let you into the hall.
  • Turning off pagers/cell phones, etc.
  • Not talking or making noise during the performance
  • Staying until the conclusion of the concert

Tuesday/Friday 1:00pm Recital Series-- provides an hour-long showcase for San Francisco State University music students and an opportunity for students to hear their peers, as well as faculty and guest artists.

Evening and weekend Senior and Graduate recitals-- are the culminating experience for SFSU undergraduate and graduate music students majoring in music performance.

The Morrison Artists Series-- was created as part of the Morrison Chamber Music Center in 1952. The Center exists in two parts: the concert Program or Artists Series and the Instructional Program. The Alexander String Quartet continues as Quartet-in-Residence, coaching young chamber musicians from the SFSU Music Department. In cooperation with San Francisco Performances, the Quartet also brings its special music making and coaching to aspiring young musicians in local schools and community groups.

The Center is supported by funds from the May Treat Morrison Estate. Mrs. Morrison, a native San Franciscan, graduated from the University of California in 1878 in one of the first classes which admitted women. When she died in 1939, she bequeathed half of her fortune to the University of California and left the other half in trust to her friend and counsel, Edward Hohfeld, for educational purposes. Grants from this trust have established the Morrison Planetarium in Golden Gate Park and the Morrison Rehabilitation Center, as well as the Morrison Chamber Music Center.

The Morrison Artists Series has been fortunate to have as its directors musicians of stature and vision. Violist Ferenc Molnar pioneered the project and served more than 20 years. He was followed briefly by violinist/conductor Andor Toth. For 16 years, Laszlo Varga, the eminent cellist/conductor and professor emeritus at San Francisco State University, nurtured a program that became synonymous with his name.

The Artists Series is a Bay Area treasure, offering music by internationally acclaimed chanber groups free of charge to a discriminating public. In so doing, we continue to fulfill Mr. Hohfeld's dream "to offer the finest music in the most accessible way."

For more information, or to put your name on the Artists Series USPS mailing list, please call (415) 338-1358.

All Morrison Artists Series performances take place in McKenna Theatre, San Francisco State University, at 3 pm on the dates indicated. Admission is free and open to the general public.
