Description
At the end of each fall semester, a SFSU composition student will be chosen to be composer-in-residence in the spring. He or she will be commissioned to write a work for one of the official SFSU student chamber ensembles. During the course of the spring semester the chosen group will work closely with the composer as the work progresses by weekly dedicating a portion of their formal rehearsal time to a reading of the work-in-progress. The composer will be present at all reading sessions to observe, listen, and make critical notes on the sonic results of the session as well as the verbal reactions of the performers. The completed work will be featured on the spring Honors Concert, and the score and tape of the commissioned work will be entered into an ongoing archive.

 Eligibility
Graduate and undergraduate students may apply. Students submitting applications must be formally registered in the university both when submitting and during the semester of the project (spring). Previous winners may not apply.

 Application
The application package must include an application form, notated scores of one to three completed works for any medium, a works list, resume, and statement of career intent. Tapes are not required but may be submitted.

 Deadline
Applications must be delivered to the Music Department Office by 11:00 a.m. on the last day of regular classes of the fall semester. They should be addressed to "Bielawa Award Adjudicators."

 Award and Announcement
Announcement of the winner will be made no later than the beginning of the spring semester. The winner will be given $200 at the time of the announcement and an additional $300 after the premiere of the work on the Honor's Day Recital. If the work is not completed in time to be prepared for the Honor's Day Recital, the project is terminated and the $300 is forfeited.
