Program at a Glance

San Francisco State University began offering museology courses in 1974, and officially inaugurated its Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies in 1987.

  • Graduate, professional program culminating in a Master of Arts degree, which can be completed in two-three years if attending full-time
  • Application to Fall semesters only; up to 25 new admits every Fall
  • Flexible program: enroll full-time or part-time depending upon your needs; most M S classes offered between 11:00am and 7:00pm
  • Coursework is interdisciplinary and hands-on, building upon your relevant academic background
  • Six areas of emphases: curation, exhibition design, museum education, museum fundraising, museum management, registration/collections management
