Abstract |
Examines race relations since the publication of Gunnar Myrdal s An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy (1944) and assesses the sociopolitical situation for blacks in the1990 s. Myrdal expected black gains if they had full suffrage, remained within the two-party system, and voted as a bloc. Myrdal s prescriptions, however, failed to increase black power significantly. Gains were onlysymbolic because blacks lost unity, socioeconomic fragmentation made blacks but one of many competing groups, and antichange backlash persisted.
