Abstract : Benjamin Quarles s The Negro in the American Revolution (1961) demonstrated that African Americans played an important role in the American Revolution and that the Revolution wasan important step forward for them. The article reviews seven books that cast doubt on some of Quarles s conclusions. Continuing struggle characterized the post-Revolution for AfricanAmericans in both the North and South.
