Abstract |
In 1919, Nashville, Tennessee, provided an exception to segregation as African-American and white women formed an alliance as part of their mobilization to win the vote. The agreementwas that African-American women would turn out to vote and white women would support efforts for social services in the African-American community. Much of this cooperation was basedon the activism of middle-class women of both races in religious organizations and the Young Women s Christian Association (YWCA). For African-American women, this was notaccommodation but a vigorous attempt to defeat segregation and win advances for their community.
