Abstract African Americans like Phyllis Wheatley, Benjamin Banneker, Frederick Douglass, and W. E. B. Du Bois argued against white assumptions and assertions of intellectual superiority over blacks as early as the1770 s. Their ideas should be reexamined and extended to combat the pseudoscientific racism supported by works like Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray s The Bell Curve (1994).
