Abstract |
Part of a special issue on the challenges Latino elders will present for the field of gerontology in the 21st century. The writer focuses on the Hispanic elderly to examine staff development issues in the area of cultural competency. She asserts that practitioners must fully serve their clients by both applying cultural modifications and by recognizing the commonalities in practice with all human beings regardless of race, ethnicity, and gender. She presents a framework for training activities that is centered around three vital components: self and other awareness, information theory, and culturally relevant practice adaptations.
