Abstract The current trend of population aging suggests the need for greater emphasis on spiritual well-being (SWB) of older populations. Current research has not provided much theoretical guidance for professional practice. To improve spiritual care for the elderly, this article reviews some influential psychosocial theories in terms of their approaches to spiritual or religious issues and aging or adult development. Finally, current theoretical advancements in this regard are introduced for improving social work practice with the elderly. (Journal abstract.)
