Recounts the 1917-69 history of the American Federation of Musicians union local 533 of Buffalo, New York, which was a separate local established by black musicians in the segregated union. The authortraces diverse aspects of local 533 s defense of black musicians interests in the workplace and in the community, explores the effects of segregation in the union, and weighs the advantages and disadvantagesbrought by the union s desegregation in 1969.
