| Abstract |
Pedro Hespanha (Faculdade de Economia, U de Coimbra, Portugal) reviews recent theoretical & empirical examinations of emerging forms of social inequality in Portugal, describing wage society's growing separation from the market & state under globalization. Innovative means of communication & community development, particularly in rural areas, are perceived as solutions to the bureaucratic barriers & outdated labor unions hindering civil society. Manuela Silva (Instit Superior de Economia & Gestao, U Tecnica de Lisboa, Portugal) discusses economic disparity on a global scale as developing countries increasingly accept the burden of mass labor for technologically advanced nations. She argues for the development of a new culture among the disenfranchised that emphasizes quality of life & ethics over consumerism. Pedro Adao e Silva proposes a radical social reform for Portugal, one featuring guaranteed minimum salaries along with other benefits, & which draws support from an international (European) network. Jose Reis (Faculdade de Economia, U de Coimbra, Portugal) challenges critical theory to facilitate state reform in Portugal & other nations suffering economic disparity by identifying contemporary forms of inequality, the most viable social actors, & alternative federal & local policies. 8 References.
