Abstract Part of a special issue on the challenges Latino elders will present for the field of gerontology in the 21st century. A study was conducted to examine the circumstances in which middle-aged female Puerto Rican caregivers carry out the tasks relevant to informal support of the elderly. The findings demonstrate the role of the primary carer of a frail, older person and contribute to understanding the dynamics of the frail Latino elderly and the situation of the Puerto Rican middle-aged females who are their primary caregivers.
