Abstract |
The production of the North Carolina s Works Progress Adminstration guidebook provoked conflict between federal, regional, and local interests. The goal of the Washington, D.C.,editors was to document regional diversity and cultural differences under a certain set of guidelines. Their control over the project was opposed by the state director of the NorthCarolina Writers Project, Edwin Bjorkman. William T. Couch, director of the University of North Carolina Press in Chapel Hill, took a middle position. Confrontations over therepresentation of sites and conditions took place, with especially sharp arguments on African-American subjects. The final product, North Carolina: A Guide to the Old North State, marginalized both African Americans and Native Americans.
