Introduces an issue commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Polish American Historical Association and the 75th anniversary of the publication of William Isaac Thomas and FlorianZnaniecki s five-volume The Polish Peasant in Europe and America (1918-20). This work marked the beginning of serious scholarly inquiry into the Polish emigration experience. Theauthors reflected views of the Chicago School of sociology in emphasizing social disorganization and personal demoralization as the key elements in the Polish immigrant experience in America.The article traces the evolution of immigration studies in the 20th century and concludes that future studies should look at comparisons of white ethnic histories with those of African,
