Abstract |
Benjamin Quarles (1904-96) must be seen as a progressive historian if only because he believed that the acquisition of knowledge would lead to an improvement in the human condition. He had anoptimistic view of history that on the surface emphasized the importance of objectivity in seeking the truth. However, his persistent efforts to demonstrate the centrality of blacks in buildingAmerican civilization, and his criticism of those who did not share his belief in the mission of the United States in the world, show he was a conceptual historian with a clear agenda.
