| Abstract |
Part of a special issue devoted to revisiting Gunnar Myrdal s An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy (1944). For Myrdal, education was key to the elimination of racism and theimprovement of blacks living conditions; but rises in income have not followed educational progress. Myrdal, assuming assimilation, failed to anticipate the black separatism of the 1960 s and 1970 s andcontinuing white racism. The question remains, fifty years after Myrdal, whether America will change its historic subjugation of blacks.
