MGS/GRE 150 Modern Greek I Introduction
to the Modern Greek language. Basic oral expression, listening comprehension,

continuation of Modern Greek II. Accelerated emphasis on conversation,
grammar, reading, and writing in contemporary Greek. This is a GE course. [4 units] MGS/ANTHRO 316 Contemporary Greece This course explores anthropological research on central aspects of culture and society in Modern Greece, including gender, class, ritual, interactions with other cultures and the cultural repercussions of economic change. MGS 397/ENG 398 Greek American Literature. A survey of the major Greek American writers of the twentieth century against the backdrop of immigrant and diasporic literature produced in the U.S. The development of the Greek American communities will also beconsidered in the broader context of the Hellenic diaspora. Authors and filmmakers to be discussed include Harry Mark Petrakis, Helen Zeese Papanikolas, Elias Kazan, Irini Spanidou, and Jeffrey Eugenides, winnerof the 2003 Pulitzer Prize. Folksongs and popular songs produced in the U.S.reflecting the Greek immigrant experience will also be discussed. [3 units] MGS schedule #14832 Time: Tuesday 6-9 p.m MGS/CW 426 Kazantzakis An exploration of Kazantzakis’ major works, novels (including Zorba the Greek, Freedom or Death, Report to Greco, and The Last Temptation of Christ), poetry, travel, plays, and prose writings in the context of European and Modern Greek literatures, as well as continental philosophy and history.
