Apple, Yahoo!, Netscape may get all the attention and we all know that Media Gulch is the hottest South of Market neighborhood but the Bay Area is home to a great many small businesses in a wide variety of other fields including food service and restaurants; import-export; light manufacturing; wholesale-retail; graphic design--the list includes most every type of business there is or can be imagined. So whether you want to show the world what multimedia really means or you want to run a neat little restaurant or you're not sure exactly what you want to do but you are sure you want to run your own business; the Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management program here at SFSU can help you get started--and more importantly, help you succeed! The major was completely redesigned in 1999 with the help of Bay Area entrepreneurs and it now focuses on providing students with the kinds of courses, assignments, and projects that develop the skills and abilities it takes to succeed, not just start. All required courses emphasize hands-on learning and significant amounts of practice so you can develop and polish your skills for finding and evaluating opportunities; building and maintaining an effective network; using precision marketing tactics; outsourcing; running a virtual company; finding money; managing cash flow; and growing and managing the company after you launch it. A semester-long internship with a new business will provide the opportunity to learn from and in a "living case." The electives offered prepare you for the various types of entrepreneurship you may choose at different times in your career--you have more choices than just starting a new business! Because the Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management program is committed to your ultimate success, we insist on setting you up to succeed. Taking courses in the major is permitted only after you have finished several core courses that form the foundation for successful entrepreneurship, so when you take courses in the major, you are prepared.
