605 Organizational Behavior

Study of human behavior in organizational settings. Focus on individual motivation and behavior; communication theory and processes; group dynamics; leadership styles. Investigation of organizational behavior utilizing seminars. Prerequisite 405.

 

640 Managing Diversity in the Workplace (revised)

In-depth exploration of how gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and size impact employee experiences and management's challenges and opportunities for developing the talents of diverse workers. Prerequisite 405.

 

650 Creativity & Innovation (revised)

Building innovative skills by breaking out of limiting patterns; integrating intuitive, rational, associative, sensory, motivational, and emotional intelligences; managing innovation through negotiating, collaborating, creating future scenarios. Prerequisite 405.   

 

670 Strategic Organizational Design & Change

The study of designing and changing organizations to respond and adapt to 21st century global competitive demands. The focus is on applied analysis at the work group, cross-functional, and organizational levels, and on the implications for managing change. Prerequisite 605.

 

648 Leadership Patterns & Opportunities

Discussion and practice of management and leadership theories and skills. Understanding individual leadership potential on a personal and organizational level.

655 Emerging Issues in Management

Business Innovation to Meet Emerging Needs

Business opportunities emerging at the intersection of business and society's emerging needs. Knowledge and practical skills to address needs not met effectively by current business practices. Prerequisites ENG 214 or equivalent for non-business majors; MGMT 405 for business majors.

342 Leadership Skills Women

Personal and career development: recognizing opportunities and overcoming systemic obstacles; developing general approaches and specific behaviors for functioning effectively in leadership roles. Cross-cultural comparisons of women's status and progress, U.S. and global. Prerequisite BUS/ENG 214 or equivalent with grade of C- or better.

354 Starting a Business

The process of starting and managing a successful small business. Students participate in a team project which takes them through an actual. Prerequisite: ENG 214 or equivalent.

430 Intro to Entrepreneurship I

The entrepreneurial process and the different kinds of entrepreneurial outcomes. Opportunity identification through analysis of industry niches. Prerequisites: ACCT 101, DS 212, DS 412, MGMT P45, MKTG 430 (all C- or better), ISYS 263 or pass proficiency test.

431 Intro to Entrepreneurship II

Skills needed in order to turn an opportunity into reality. Business plans, launch decisions, and obtaining risk capital. Prerequisite MGMT 430.

432 Entrepreneurial Strategy & Tactics

Types of entrepreneurial entry strategies; factors influencing the selection of an appropriate strategy and the translation of that strategy into effective tactics. Prerequisite MGMT 430.

433 Building the Entrepreneurial Venture

How entrepreneurs and owners of small businesses can keep their businesses alive and vital as they grow sales and expand to new markets. Prerequisites 431, 432.

436 Family Business Dynamics

Examination of the special business challenges faced by family-owned businesses. Techniques to manage these complex issues within the context of entrepreneurship. Paired with MGMT 836. Students who have completed MGMT 436 may not take MGMT 836 later for credit. Prerequisites ENG 215 or equivalent.

567 Internship in Mgmt

Experience in a business field. Individual conferences with instructor. Major report required. May be repeated for a total of 6 units. [CSL may be available; consult index for page reference.]  Prerequisites MGMT 405 (C- or better), consent of instructor, department chair, and business internship.

610 Human Resources

Policies and practices in human resource management. Department functions including law, planning, recruitment, selection, performance appraisal, information systems, and current issues. Prerequisite 405.

659 Intro to Bus International Negotiation (cross referenced w/IBUS)

Intercultural negotiating skills become more essential as business becomes more global and participative. Exercises involving various protagonists, organizational contexts, and situations. (Also offered as IBUS 659. May not be repeated under alternate prefix.) Prerequisites IBUS 330 and MGMT 405 with C- or better or consent of instructor.

Bus 440 Ethics at Work:  II Business

Ethical theory in the business enterprise from a variety of perspectives. Role of work, co-workers, superiors, and environment. Prerequisite PHIL 440.

Bus 450 Greening of Bus

Impact of business firms on the natural environment; forces driving businesses to become environmentally sustainable and types of approaches businesses are taking to respond to environmental issues.
